4.16 Rule of Sheva IV: Names of God

When a prefix is added to אלֹהִים and the Tetragrammaton, the vowel changes are irregular:

  • With אֱלֹהִים the aleph becomes quiescent after a prefix:
    • אֱלֹהִים + לְ = לֵאלֹהִים
  • With the Tetragrammaton, the prefixed letter with take a Patach, with nothing under the Yod:
    • בַיהוָה
    • You can see an example of this in Ruth 1:21: וַֽיהוָה֙
