24.2 Niphal Meanings

Niphal is usually equivalent to the english Passive voice, but not always

  • Most often, the Niphal is simple action with either a passive or reflexive voice
  • שָׁמַע
    • Qal - He heard
    • Niphal - He was heard (passive), or he heard himself (reflexive)
  • Some English translations do not overtly seem passive or reflexive
    • אמן - Niphal - to be reliable, faithful, trustworthy
    • לחם - Niphal - to fight, do battle with
