16.6 QI 1G

The QI \(Pre\) acts as if it is the result of the Rule of Sheva - this will be a handy tidbit to keep in mind with 1G verbs

  • The Rule of Sheva prevents two contiguous Vocal Sheva/Hateph Vowels
    • NOT *יְקְ, BUT יִקְ
    • Whenever we see the \(Pre \ =\) ְ יִ of the Qal Imperfect, think “Rule of Sheva”114
  • The 1G will reject the Vocal Shewa in favor of a Hateph Vowel
  • Then we can think of it as if the Imperfect “originally” wanted \(V_P\) and \(V_1\) to both be vocal sheva or a hateph vowel if a guttural; however, this is not allowable by the Rule of Sheva
    • What wanted to be יְחֲ, becomes יַחֲ after the Rule of Sheva is applied

To identify QI from a 1G verb, apply the Rule of Sheva

  • יַחֲ or יֶחֱ with a guttural consonant would be יִקְ with two non-guttural consonants
  • יֶהֶזְ or יַחַלְ with at least one guttural consonant would be יִקְטְ with three non-guttural consonants

3mp יַחַלְפוּ יֶחֶזְקוּ יִקְטְלוּ

  1. Historically the QI \(Pre\) did not come the Rule of Sheva, however pretending that it did makes it easy to recognize QI 1G verbs.↩︎
