17.7 Imperfect with Vav often indicates purpose

Instead of “and”, translate the Imperfect+Vav as “so that (he) may”

• וְקָרָ֤אתִי לָךְ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה מֵינֶ֔קֶת מִ֖ן הָעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת וְתֵינִ֥ק לָ֖ךְ אֶת־הַיָּֽלֶד
  • “Shall I go call a Hebrew nurse SO THAT she MAY nurse the child for you?” (Ex 2:7)
• נִבְנֶה־לָּ֣נוּ עִ֗יר וּמִגְדָּל֙ וְרֹאשׁ֣וֹ בַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנַֽעֲשֶׂה־לָּ֖נוּ שֵׁ֑ם
  • “Let’s make a tower…SO THAT we MAY make a name for ourselves.” (Gen 11:4)
• Regular imperfect translations are also possible
